I Want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper and Other Tidbits…

Don’t worry Hubby, I’m not leaving you for a lighthouse keeper.  I don’t actually know any, ha!  I jest of course, and he knows it. He also reads my posts…

In response to my Lighthouse Award post on Monday in which I mentioned not being able able to get a certain little ditty out of my head, as in ‘In want to marry a Lighthouse keeper and live by the side of the sea’, both Jenny and Andrea told me that they had never heard of it. So, as promised ladies (and for anybody else who may have been wondering what I was on about)  I have tracked this song down for you.

To be honest, I thought that everyone knew it but what I’ve discovered is that although it was first recorded by Erika Eigen in 1968, apparently, it shot to fame from Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 film, A Clockwork Orange. Latterly, it was also used in M&S’s 2008 television advertising campaign. Do you remember that?  I don’t!

So just for you lovely ladies, and anyone else who might want a listen, here it is and Jenny, just for you, this is the closest you will ever get to watching anybody prancing about in shorts to this little number as it certainly won’t be me, ha!  Besides, I have no idea where my pink shorts have gone…

So there you have it! I suppose too the only question that remains is how come I know this song so well and frequently find myself humming it?  Most certainly not from the TV ad, I’m sure of that.  I can only conclude that it must have become embedded in my brain because once-upon-a-time Aspie D was obsessed with watching A Clockwork Orange.   Need I say more?

Now onto to those other tidbits…

Yukta Kher is a new blogger (a lovely young lady of 16!) who came over to congratulate me for my awards and also to nominate me for The Sunshine Award.

This is to acknowledge her kindness and to wish her every success as she shares  her ‘words, visions and trivia along the way’… thank you very much Yukta.

One other thing I haven’t forgotten about is that a couple of you (pommepal and Steven) showed a great deal of interest in the crocodile that appeared in one of my photographs from my ‘Historical Lewes‘ post.  Here is that photo once again for reference for those of you who may not have seen it the first time:

Windows at the back of The Snowdrop pub in Lewes, Sussex. Notice the chalk cliffs behind it. Taken in late summer, 2013 (c) Sherri Matthews 2014

Isn’t he a beaut? Just for you two I did some more research and found out that this magnificent crocodile is neither a sculpture nor made from steel.  It is in fact plastic,  made up of several dozen wheel trims from old Vauxhalls, Rovers and Renaults by a local Lewes artist.  There are several other pieces of this artist’s work around Lewes and next time I visit I will try to find out his/her name.

So there you have it.  Mystery solved.

Well, what a week it’s been.  I’ve been quite staggered by everyone’s kind and loving words in response to this week’s posts, thank you all again so much but in the end I have to admit I couldn’t get to either of my usual photo challenge posts despite my earlier enthusiasm!  I ran out of steam, that’s all!

Next week things really will be back to normal.  Among other things, I plan to write a post that includes a little name-dropping, ha!  Well, you know how it is, all this fame is going to my head and there’s no stopping me now…

Have a great weekend everyone, keep safe and keep smiling and keep your light shining…and, as I always say…

Watch this space!

Thanks so much Jo, what a lovely compliment, ahh, I’m really humbled by that! Yes, isn’t that crocodile something? I took that photo late last summer. I do like how most of the towns here have beautiful hanging baskets everywhere like this, they certainly do brighten the place up!
Many congratulations right back to you and I hope you have a super weekend! 🙂 xxxxxxxx

Looking forward to the name-dropping. Have a lovely weekend, Sherri! 🙂

Ah, the Snowdrop pub photo, one of my favorites. I can’t wait for us to share our first pint there, underneath the crocodile! Happy Weekend! xo

Yes, you remember this photo and oh me too Jill, right there, beneath that old crocodile one lazy, hazy summer evening in England, sharing a pint, or two…can see us there now…
Thank you Jill and you and Derek from Devon a very Happy Weekend too!! xo

I’m another one who hasn’t heard of this song! And I don’t remember the advert either, so thank you for posting it. So where can I find myself a lighthouse keeper then? Preferably one who lives in a sunny place like in the video. And a skinny body too 😀

Oh, and I spoke too late about WP and Chrome – I can’t see your pub photo! Have to pop into I.E for a quick squizz 🙂

Ahh, I knew what you meant, I hope you were able to see the pic. What a nuisance this problem has been, just been over to Jenny’s blog and joined in your conversation about it. As I said there, it always seems to be us, or am I just becoming paranoid?

Well, This is all very interesting – I have never seen that M&S advert, never heard that song – where have I been? However, it seems that others are as mystified as me. I can understand why it would stick in your head, though.
Isn’t Twiggy amazing – she looks great but I think Tracy is right about the other girls – far too thin – they look like Modigliani models, only more cheerful.
Thanks for filling us in on this song, missing from my life for so long – now I can’t hear anything else.
Clockwork Orange? I can well remember that iconic poster of Malcolm McDowell staring down from every bus in London!

So now you know Jenny and you are very welcome!! I didn’t know it from the M&S ad either so, as you can see, must be from Clockwork Orange! Claire had THAT Malcolm McDowell poster on her bedroom wall for ages, until she moved onto anther phase and obsession. I used to find it quite menacing whenever I caught a glimpse of it as I walked past her room.
Ha, yes, cheerful Modigliani models, now that would be quite something and yes again,Twiggy does look amazing although she isn’t doing ads for M&S anymore is she, more’s the pity.
Glad to have solved this little mystery for you and I hope you have been happily humming this catchy little ditty all weekend long, although if so you are probably swearing about me under your breath right about now… 😉 x

Ahh, Yukta will enjoy your visit, thank you Sylvia and I hope you are having a great weekend too 🙂 xx

I don’t believe I’ve ever heard this song but I can understand why it would stick in your head. The tune is zippy and seems to loop once you start. There, I’m doing it now!

I can now admit ,,, I did not know the song at all till watching the ad… glad there were others like me… by the way was that twiggy in the ad … I have to admit all of those Ladies were awfully thin if they had swallowed a pea whole they’d look pregnant… none there with a bit of meat on their bones…
Loved the share re the crocodile… quite fascinating what material an artist will think of using…
Damn now I have that ditty in my head, and I don’t know any women lighthouse keepers… thanks for that…lol

Ha ha! Yes, this catchy little ditty will stick with you, so be warned! I’ve been humming it for years – says a lot doesn’t it, lol? 😉
Yes Bulldog, that is Twiggy. She isn’t doing ads for M&S anymore which is a shame and yes again, those other models are way too thin, but this is just what all women aspire to look like these days, or so the fashion moguls would have us believe. No wonder there is so much pressure to diet…
I knew you would love that old crocodile, he is fabulous isn’t he? I’m looking forward to finding more pieces by this artist when next in Lewes.
Well, sounds like neither of us know any lighthouse keepers, male or female, so better just keep humming away…and hopefully you aren’t swearing about me just about now, lol 😉

Prancing around in shorts? All the business over at my pad with leather and fat men (watch as everyone flocks over to inspect now…!) and Lord only knows what else, now this. Has everyone gone funny, or something? There must be spring in the air! 😉

I remember the song and I think it must be from that ad, as I can remember hearing it from TV and not Clockwork Orange – I’ve never seen that film. It’s one of the many I tell myself I must watch, but never get around to. I love it! Super-catchy.

Another award, too? Well… Great Scott! Congratulations, yet again! And, awesome to hear more about the cute croc, thanks 🙂

I hope you had a good weekend!

Well, gotta hand it to you, that’s one unique and clever way to gain new followers, lol 😉 Or….maybe not, ha 🙂

Glad you like this little ditty, I hum it all the time but then I’m sure you’re not the least bit surprised to learn this. It explains an awful lot doesn’t it?? See…there I go again…I want to marry a lighthouse keeper……

You must try and watch A Clockwork Orange, it is quite something. Actually, and purely by coincidence, in my ‘name-dropping’ post later on in the week there is a little link to this film which I realised. Bet I’ve got you thinking now eh?? 😉

Thanks, and yes, isn’t that croc info interesting? I’ll try to see about getting more pics of this artist’s work when next in lovely Lewes, just for you…see, I’m good to you aren’t I?!

A good weekend thanks, flew by as they always do, ha ha, pardon the pun (I was not thinking about my magical brolly when I wrote that, honestly). I hope you have caught up on some sleep at long last and you had a good one too?

Right, I really must go and look for those shorts….

Glad you are happy about that, it is very catching but I really like it too 🙂 I asked my daughter about this and she said that it was playing on the record player at the part where the parents were sitting in their living room while their son was being ‘cured’ by the doctors! So more than a hint of irony there then 😉
