Thanks to freebie tickets, Hubby and I took off yesterday to spend the day at Goodwood Festival of Speed. This is not what we usually do on a Thursday but it was a lovely distraction.
The festival we attended is held in the grounds of Goodwood House, a country house owned by the Duke of Richmond. The motor circuit was created by the 9th Duke of Richmond, Frederick Gordon-Lennox, in 1948.

This type of event is something totally new to us so we were intrigued as soon as we arrived to see what it was all about. First though, it was down to business, meaning lunch. The grounds are huge with a vast array of food vendors but we settled for the organic burger stand.
Happy with our burgers (they were delicious), we set off to drool (Hubby, not me) over the mind-boggling variety of cars on show.

It was during this time that my somewhat diver-ish ways began to surface, although they were already on alert when I spied the champagne tent near the burger van. Perfect, I thought, for a lovely summer’s day. Obviously the only people buying it didn’t need to ask the price, as I did, which the barman coolly informed me was a mere £75 ($128).
“How about a glass?” I asked innocently. £14.75 ($25) for a glass (plastic at that) was my answer. Good job Hubby had already finished his burger, otherwise he would have choked on it.
Never mind. It didn’t take me long to find the next best thing: a nice glass of Pimms. So far so good. I put any thoughts of drinking bubbly out of my mind until we came across these:
The largest one would take up my entire garden and swallow up my little summerhouse, but what fun it would be to spend an afternoon in one with a nice bottle of fizz chilling in that ice bucket. Not sure about the TV though…
The race track is used for speed trials and some of the cars whizzing around throughout the day really moved, but there weren’t any super-duper race cars on show unfortunately.

They will probably be racing during the weekend but it was fun to stand by the hay bales and imagine we were at somewhere like, oh, I don’t know, Le Mans.

Talking of which, who can think of Le Mans and not think of Steve McQueen? I know I can’t. Some of you already know my feelings about the King of Cool from my post about my friend Clint (as in Eastwood).
No explanation necessary
This is what happens when certain movies are watched by an impressionable girl. I’m talking about The Great Escape, what else? I was doomed from the very start.
So it was only natural that I headed to my favourite pit stop of the day – this beautiful replica of the 1968 Ford Mustang GT used in his classic 1968 movie Bullitt:

Remember the iconic scene when Steve McQueen is chasing two hitmen in a Dodge Charger through the streets of San Francisco? Surely this is one of the coolest movie moments ever, exuding as it does the epitome of a man who knows his cars and a few other things besides.
If you can spare even one minute, that’s all you have to wait before you see the man himself:
Steve McQueen. Fast cars. My Pimms was dry. Then out of nowhere, I saw it. A restaurant, simply called: Seafood & Champagne. Oh why oh why hadn’t we seen this before our burger lunch? Still, considering that it cost £18 (about $30) for two burgers and a bottled water, it was probably just as well.
Darn it.
And then, my inner diva exploded. Dear friends, what did I see? Not only was it a vintage Airstream but it was loaded with French Champagne, Veuve Clicquot no less.

I think this wonderful day out in the summer sunshine, catching the buzz of the day and enjoying a lovely time of R&R with Hubby has given me ideas above my station. Still, one can dream as I’ve said before, and I did mention as we trekked back across the fields that perhaps we could return next year and pre-order the champagne hamper as a starter before heading out to the Seafood & Champagne restaurant for lunch?
Not forgetting to watch the speed trials too of course.

Oh those were the days and as soon as I saw the pic of Steve McQueen, Bullitt came to mind. Oy. As he flew down that steep hill, I couldn’t breathe. He is done for, I thought. He’s one of my favorites too.

This looks like a really fun day out – as you know, I was interested to hear how you got on at Goodwood – now I’m going to put it on a things to do in the future list. You had the perfect weather too, didn’t you? Seafood hamper and champagne? Definitely, my dear. A girl has to have standards …
By the way – I never knew my Dad cut anyone else’s hair. He used to cut my fringe in the 60’s and it looked just like yours. Never had any sunnies though.

Quite a coincidence wasn’t it? We did hit the weather just right Jenny! Funny, as Eldest Son was heading the opposite direction, from Sussex to Somerset for Glasto and we were heading his way, meaning he got the rain just as he was setting up his tent, poor guy! We didn’t hit the rain until we headed back and then yesterday we had thunder.
Haha…definitely, got to have standards…and that’s so funny…looks like your dad had a sideline in haircuts!!! As for the sunnies, they were especially for our hols so I was gutted when they floated off down the river… 😉

A-m-a-z-i-n-g, Sherri! Great pictures, especially the orange AirStream (with champagne!!!) My dad took my brother to the Indy 500 one year, and the next year he took me along with them. I tried to act all smart and excited, but I mostly remember it was hot and loud, and the car/driver we wanted to win came in third. But I do love special cars and understand car racing, and your pictures were excellent!

Can you believe it Marylin? I HAD to have hubby take that pic by the Airstream, haha! Oh how wonderful to go to the Indy 500 but I can well understand your memories of it. Car shows aren’t my thing normally either but this one had such a buzz about it and made me better understand why people do enjoy them so much. I shall embarrass you here but my girls and I think you are a Diva of the best sort. They always wished I had half your style! Someday I shall tell you the story of how close I came to having Clint Eastwood to dinner-oh well like your sunglasses, lost! I am not big on car shows but you made a great case for going to one! Sherri, so much in this post! First of all, I love the little diva you! Cool shades AND a life jacket at the same time–accessory heaven! 😉 Then the cars: my husband gets a car magazine because he likes pretty old cars. I remember seeing in there something about one of Steve McQueen’s cars and what it sold for. It seems like it wasn’t such a special car and it sold for a FORTUNE because it was his. Lastly, the beverages. I had to look up Pimms. Can you explain what it is? The online descriptions confused me. $25 for one of those tiny flimsy glasses of champagne? Ugh. What a way to show people who they think will guy the cars LOL. Great post.

There is a special edition out this summer, blackcurrant and elderflower, yum! It is the quintessential alcoholic summer drink over here, mixed one part with two parts lemonade (7-Up) and loaded with fruit such as slices of lemon, orange, cucumber, strawberries and garden mint. Most often it’s made up in a large jug then served with loads of ice individually for parties. Or, just lovely and refreshing to make one and sip whilst sitting in the garden on a warm, summer’s day!

It was a fun day Tracy, especially as it was so different to what we usually do! I have to admit, I do love the sound of a V8 engine and watching cars race around a track! Restored cars amaze me, how absolutely beautiful they look after all the work put into them…bet your son had fun with that!
Yes, even with the way things have gone economy-wise, there are still an awful lot of people with an awful lot of money. The new Bentley was revealed when we were there (we didn’t see it, just heard it announced over the Tannoy) and the announcer said that a lot of customers now are in their twenties…I can’t even imagine what that car costs…

Yes, it is very sad indeed…is the economy improving over there now? Here, house prices are surging again but of course this makes it even more impossible for young people to buy. Interest rates might be going up too. I wonder though, it all feels like a false economy to me as everything is just getting more and more expensive and yet I don’t see people getting the pay rises.
But someone is making the money to buy those beautiful cars…

Ahh…well thank you Jill, but it’s funny, I usually wear dark colours so much (black, grey and more black!) Still, had to be done, next to that vintage Airstream, especially after my camping post!
I had to laugh at those sunglasses, very 1960’s! I was so young yet I remember then so clearly…and when they floated away 😦 I’m sure I must have been given a replacement though although they probably weren’t quite as ‘with-it’, lol 😉

I know…after my camping post a couple of week’s ago and writing about my dream of a road-trip across the USA in an Airstream, I couldn’t believe it when I saw this! We didn’t get to see inside unfortunately but bet it was beautiful. I know what you mean about play houses and vintage caravans, I’ve always felt the same way Rachel, and that’s also why I obsessed about having a summerhouse ever since playing in my grandparent’s one…until I got my own, at last… 😉

What a great weekend you are having despite not having the champers. Men seem to always be in their element with cars but when it comes to old ones I have to admit I’m as bad. Those summer houses are something else. My husband used to tell me about the summerhouse they had in the garden at Patcham and I was imagining something at least as big as those you’ve shown above. In Australia (in those days anyway) gardens were large. When I first visited I couldn’t believe that the narrow garden shed with glass doors one side was the structure that Roger had been so proud of and delighted in using when he lived in the UK. The first winter there however I soon found out the value of it. What a great walk down memory lane this has been with you – and a bit of Steve Mcqueen thrown in as well. Cheers Irene

Classic cars are great aren’t they, I’m with you on that. I wonder if summerhouses are a very British thing? I loved your story about your husband and his summerhouse! My grandparents had a lovely one at the end of their garden in their home in Hale, Cheshire, and as a girl I adored playing in it. I wanted my own for years but had to wait until a couple of years ago when hubby put the one we now have up in our garden here – and which, as you know, is now my little writing space as well as a place to relax in and overlook the garden 🙂 it has electricity so I’ve got lighting and use a little fan heater in the winter. Amazingly it keeps warm and dry! I’ve always been obsessed by summerhouses so I can relate to Roger’s excitement about his and wanting to share it with you! But I can well imagine coming from Australia how tiny everything must have seemed to you. I bet the gardens are huge there. Everything felt miniscule here when I first came back from the States.

I have not tried the concoctions you speak of, I am being tight at the minute and saving most of my money for another trip abroad. Although I’m not a car fan in particular I can appreciate a nice set of curves (and also square edges!).

Yes Miss Sherri, those sunglasses definitely brought out the little Diva in you! Oh gosh, I can well imagine the prices at Disney World! Never been, we used to go to Disneyland all the time, living in California and the grandparents living in LA, and we had it down pat after a while as to how to go without spending a small fortune on all the extras, but not easy with 3 kids, ha! I honestly don’t know how young families afford days out anymore…
Ahh…well, that is so kind of you mon amie, thank you…although I look as if I was more annoyed than anything, haha! And I remember those sunglasses so very well 😀

yeah, I totally know what you mean!!! I am not sure how so many do it as well –
and I have to share a quick story about Disney…. in the 90’s we had a bunch of friends who were taking all these trips and cruises – and dropping like 10 grand sometimes. yowza. and that was back then! and well, when we decided to have me stay home with the kids – well it involves sacrifice. I still worked – but did not do the major career route so I could be home mostly (even though after a few years of tag teaming too much my hubs and I had to adjust things because we were neglecting “us” – ah, takes learning and living sometimes to find the groove)- anyhow, back to my story – so I am never really a jealous kinda gal –
but I do remember thinking that we would likely never have the luxury of disney cruises or the week long stays at hotels – but I did not camp on it because life was so busy anyhow, and also just to be home with the kids was priceless – and I knew it was worth more than any vacation cause when we give our kids “us” – that is a better gift then giving them expensive trips or materials. plus, we had lots of local things to do – water park passes and well, we were blessed. and had lots of rich books too – including a handful of disney ones – lol!
anyhow, then my mom had kidney failure and before we knew it – we were living in the state of Florida – to be near family and to help out. The move was a step up in salary (not much compared to what most make – but for us and in our world – ’twas nice – ha!) and well, we had the chance to get the annual Disney passes. And so there we were – able to go to Disney anytime we wanted to make the drive to Orlando. We still never got the cruises or the on site hotel – but who cares – we had day long adventures at all the parks and could even go for mini trips of three hours if we wanted – and we did not go too much because we can only take so much of the mouse!
anyhow, when we knew we were moving away from Florida (it was a short time living there and I am glad) -well we squeezed in a bunch of disney trips – and here is what I wanted to share. This is going back more then ten years and so a twenty dollar bill went a bit further.
well it was one of our last trips to disney and my husband and son wanted to go on one more ride. My youngest was crashed in the stroller and I needed to sit. We were in Epcot and I was waiting for them near food booths – and my nose had me looking – and before I knew it – I found a place that had a salmon sampler for like seven bucks and then wine for 8 bucks (in plastic) – now the servings were small – but out came my twenty bucks – enough for a tip too – and as I sat on the bench waiting and indulging in my rich, dense snack – and as my son slept – the lights from the water and the sounds of disney were all around. it truly was a slice of heaven….
and here’s the best part for me – it is how God truly gives us the desires of our heart. many times it is not always packaged the way we expect – it takes time – and there may be many hard days and dry seasons woven in between this and that – but we serve an awesome God who loves to bless us with little gifts and with little desires of our hearts. And for me that day – there was nothing I would have wanted more than salmon and red wine as we said good-bye to the gift of a little bit of Dinsey in our lives…- and that little booth at Epcot had some amazing chef hiding in there – ha!

Well I thank you so much Y for sharing this delightful story with me, means a lot that. I hear every word you are saying here on so many levels. For one, we did just the same as you, I stayed home as a full time mum and we made many sacrifices when friends all around us had all the ‘toys’ and we couldn’t afford any of them. But, I gave my children my time and they had all they needed and had a good life. And lots of books too 🙂 I wouldn’t trade it for the world, that was by far the happiest time of my life and I adored every second I had with them. I wish their dad and I could have worked things out (and darn it, I tried so hard) to keep our family intact but that is a whole other story for another time…
So…yes, I know just where you are coming from and then I know exactly what you mean about God blessing us with the desires of our hearts, no matter how small, and how much that salmon and red wine meant to you and what a beautiful memory of your last Disney trip and the end of that era in your family’s life. Something you’ll very forget…a truly beautiful share this.

Okay, I admit that cars leave me a little indifferent. But as always, you manage to make any topic attractive. Of course Steve McQueen helps. The French champagne, too. Have you ever been to Le Mans? One of my uncles lived so close that when I visited the sound of the cars roaring and zooming on the racetracks was deafening.
But the coolest in your post remains the photo of adorable little you.

I did think of you Evelyne when I wrote this post! We have driven by Le Mans on the way down to the Dordoigne region a couple of years ago but have never been to the racing there. I bet that must have been something hearing the noise of all those race cars so close to your uncle’s home…
