Writing, Tennis and Summertime Awards

With the word ‘Tennis’ in the title, you have your first hint at the lateness of this post, meaning I started it a good couple of weeks ago during Wimbledon.  Which also means that it is now redundant.  Thank goodness for cut and paste is all I can say, best invention EVER.

Still, I’m left struck with the idea that tennis is a bit like writing: some matches end quickly and efficiently in straight sets thanks to a few forehand smashes, but others are slogging matches, filled with crushing lows, victorious highs and endless umpire calls.

In such matches, players grow weary, frustrated, angry even; they can’t believe what’s happening.  They worked so hard, hit the ball just right, gave it their all but are left wondering where all the chalk-dust has gone.  Surely the ball was in, you cannot be serious!

Face it, the ball was out.

Some go on to victory.  Either way, they don’t give up; they keep practicing, listen to their coaches and ask, “How can I improve?”   They dream of their comeback and don’t give up. After all, there is always next year, right?

Ultimately, they aim for the prize no matter what.

As do we writers and in turning to our writing friends and mentors to encourage, guide, and coach us, we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.

So what better time than now to thank some lovely writer/blogging friends who help keep me on the ‘write’ track? Not to mention, for spoiling me rotten with goody-bags stuffed to overflowing with awards.

Starting with two wonderfully talented and inspiring writers.  I’m proud to call these strong, dynamic, and amazing women my friends.:

First lovely Jo, amazing published author, supporter of indie writers everywhere. Just look at this incredible bundle of goodies:

Wow!

Then lovely Irene, whose memoir writing is at once fascinating and poignant, popped a few more into the bag, making it so heavy that I could hardly carry it:

Three more amazing and lovely bloggers added to the treasure trove: Marlene nominated me for the The Versatile Blogger Award, Brenda for the Most Influential Blogger and Maria  for The Liebster Award.

Marlene is a new blogging friend with a zest for life, new challenges and writing. Brenda, my ‘Cotswold’ friend who found my blog in the early days, writes delightful poetry and prose and Maria, my lovely Aspie friend, has recently changed her blog to reflect the wonderful, positive changes in her life.  So happy for her!

Thank you so much all you lovely ladies for these wonderful awards!

Finally, I have three great guys to thank:

My good pal and partner-in-crime Steven for The Leibster Award (see above).  I say this about him because he and I have great plans for turning my summerhouse into the TARDIS and who knows what could happen then? No doubt plenty of shenanigans and high jinks…bring it on!

Don Charisma and  Bespoke Traveller both of whom so graciously nominated me for the  Most Influential Blogger Award.

Don is known by most of you I think, he is one popular guy with a huge following due to his kind, charming ways.

Bespoke Traveler is a fantastic travel blog written by Jesse and Atreyee whose mission is to bring ‘curated tales for the curious traveler’.

Thank you so much, you guys are wonderful!

As always with awards, I find the hardest part is knowing who to nominate (and I know that not all of you accept awards), but please know how much I love and appreciate you all. Your visits here to this little corner of blogland mean the world to me, my summerhouse would be very dull indeed without your company.

Since I’ve already participated in many of these awards, the awards I’ve chosen to send on this time (with their corresponding rules) are:

The Award for Love and Kindness (from Jo)

award-loveandkindnessThe Rules:

Another award post will follow this one later today but I have one more rule to fulfill: for rule number 5 above, my choice is the amazing classic ‘Summer Breeze’ by Seals and Crofts (although I do also love the Isley Brothers’ cover version). This three-minute clip is worth watching for the beautiful images alone.  If this doesn’t get you in a summer mood this Monday morning, then I don’t know what will.

Enjoy and Happy Monday to you all.  Love Sherri x

Well, gulp, this is really an honour. To be included in such a prestigious list. I’d like to thank my mum and my dad and my nan and my parental grandpa and the milkman (who I resemble, oddly, or oddly resemble) and the baker (I have his nose) and the man who emptied the cesspit (we don’t look the same but have the same curious scent)…. I couldn’t have done it without them. Thank you everso, Sherri. I really am touched.

Sherri – you know I’m not one for awards, but you are so deserving of these. You spend so much time reading and commenting on all our blogs as well as posting on your own AND writing your memoir – how on earth do you find the time? We are all so appreciative of your friendship – long may it last. Have a lovely week writing in your summerhouse. Do you really write in there all the time – I’d be happy for my lot to clear out a bit of our shed for me 🙂

I know Jenny, and if you were I would be giving every one of these to you!!! But you know my sentiments…no more need be said. As for making time, well, how do I do it indeed, ha!! I do actually have a system (and funnily enough I just read Jill’s comment) which somehow works….just. Of course, I don’t do awards very often, so they build up and then it goes mad but I have been trying to get this post out for a good few weeks now!!! I am determined though to get my memoir written and that is my priority. Remember too, I don’t have a ‘day job’ so I can make more time in the day for writing…
Ahh…the secrets of the summerhouse! Haha…well, believe me, it really isn’t much bigger than a shed but yes, I do write in there a fair bit but I can’t get a good internet signal out there so often enough I’m inside too. But shhhh….don’t tell everyone that! Thank you as always for your lovely message…and you have good writing week too 🙂

  7. Hi Sherri! Congratulations on the plethora of awards! They are so well deserved. You are indeed the Queen of WordPress! Like Jenny, I don’t know how you find the time to juggle all that you do, but you obviously have a system.

Hi Jill and thank you so much! Haha, you crack me up, that ‘s so funny, the Queen of WordPress!!! I better get my tiara back on, LOL!! You are right though, I do have a system which works if I really keep on top of it so long as I keep disciplined (not always easy!) as I was just replying to Jenny, but remember I also have the luxury of being able to write in the day as I don’t work outside the home. Although,, the distractions do seem to be endless and trying to get to my writing is like pulling teeth sometimes…and these award’s posts take a long time so I start them well ahead of time!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video, I wondered if anyone would actually listen to it. It’s a great song isn’t it? Have a great week Jill 🙂 xo

  22. Wow!!! Sherri, I don’t know quite what to say; I’ve never been nominated for anything so lovely before. I’ve taken part in a few ballet competitions, but that was so long ago that I can’t remember the etiquette for collecting the awards, so I hope you’ll excuse me for blundering my way through this “thank you” message as if I have no idea of how to behave. I’m very new to blogging and really didn’t know that there was such a wonderful community spirit amongst bloggers. I’m humbled by the positive attention my own blog is receiving, and very happy to accept any awards that should come my way for either its contents or its appearance – I have to admit it feels like I’ve been caught with my pants down around my ankles as it needs a lot of posts finishing off and a few licks of paint over some of the cracks, but I’ll step quickly out of them, pick the offending evidence up and stuff them in my handbag on the way to the stage … did I brush my teeth before I left the house? Thank goodness those bloomers were clean 🙂

Loads of heartfelt thanks, the brightest of blessings, and sunshine for your summerhouse,
    Tally 🙂

ps: how exactly do I accept? Is it as simple as reading the above rules and carrying them out?

    Like

    • Sherri says:

Oh Tally, I love your message, I’m laughing now 😀 You should read Geoff and Charli’s replies above…seems a few of us even managed to grab a selfie with ‘Brangelina’ whilst on the way to the stage, haha!! So get in there quick! Phew, thank goodness your bloomers are clean LOL 😀
Seriously though, you are so very welcome and deserving and I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to send these beautiful awards your way. This is why I love awards, to be able to send them on, especially to new bloggers because I remember when I received my first one or two and how amazing it was. Still is of course, but back then, when my blog was hardly noticed, I couldn’t believe that anyone found me, much less wanted to give me an award!! I almost dropped my laptop 😉 So I understand completely but please don’t worry about having to rush this, there is no time frame. Your blog looks amazing, I have to say 🙂
To answer your question, yes, just prepare a post, however you want to do it, and follow the rules here (and feel free to copy and paste). You can upload the awards (right click on the images and save them to your own files) then using the image ‘widget’ under settings to post them on your blog. Please don’t hesitate to contact me by email if you need any more help, although much of what I’ve done is by trial and error, mostly by error I might add, ha! sherrimatthews@btinternet.com
Thank you so much Tally for your lovey kind wishes, my summerhouse is shining brightly now. Loads of blessings and sunshine to you too… 😎 🙂 😀

      • Hi Sherrie,
It seems like only yesterday I was opening this lovely post and feeling sooooo thankful to have met such wonderful new friends, yet looking at the date I replied, it was already ten days ago! I would say “my, where does the time go” with suitable dramatic gestures attached, but I know all too well where it goes: a funny, heady mixture of my inability to organise efficiently and constantly living in the enjoyment of the moment, both of which cause time to play strange games around me. I’m soooooo glad there’s no time limit, and just wanted to let you know I’ll get around to it eventually, in what I call Tally time!
Lots of wonderfully bright summer blessings,
        Tally 🙂
PS: how can I find out what keys produce each of the different smiley faces?

Hi Sherri- I never thought to compare writing and tennis- but there are many similarities indeed. Finals weekend I was up early and poised at the television. I believed in Roger (yeah he made it to the final) but he sure couldn’t hold his serve in the end. I had to say congrats to Novak- he surly earned it. Let’s see what happens at The Open- wish we could fly out to NYC to catch some matches in person!

Hi Tieshka, always lovely to read your comments, and yes, great to share tennis updates with you! I have to admit, with all my faves out I was rooting for Roger but in the end all kudos to Novak. It was a wonderful final wasn’t it, going to 5 sets like that? Really thrilling, unlike the women’s which was so boring. Ahh…yes, I would LOVE to go there with you. Think of the fun we would have 🙂
