A Birthday, A Star Sign And Flash Fiction

It was my birthday last Wednesday but the celebrations started off the weekend before sitting on Brighton Beach watching the sun set whilst sipping a glass or two of Prosecco with my lovely people.

On the day, I was treated to lunch at a wonderful vintage tea room by my lovely mum and daughter, who enjoyed it as much as I did.  From the minute we walked in, we felt as if we were going back in time:

Of course, we had to take tea in all its finery:

Later on I was wonderfully surprised by a delivery of a gorgeous basket of autumn flowers from my daughter:

The celebrations continued with family and friends into the week and even the cats were overcome in their excitement to join in the festivities:

(c) Sherri Matthews 2014

Well…I’m sure they meant well…

Interestingly then that over at Carrot Ranch,  Charli posted her ‘zodiac’ prompt for this week’s flash fiction challenge on the date of my birth, asking us the following:

‘September 10, 2014 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) focus on the personality traits of a character informed by the zodiac. It can be a revelation of how he or she acts or a focus on behavior because of personality traits. It can be a relationship ruled by the stars. You can have fun and exaggerate, or keep it subtle and refined. You can use zodiac terms or not.’

My star sign is Virgo although I may not have had a star sign at all: at a crucial stage of her pregnancy with me, my mother was told that she was losing her baby and was admitted to hospital.  It was only because a doctor happened to have a listen one last time with a stethoscope – there being no ultrasound equipment back then – and to his amazement detected a heartbeat, my heartbeat, that she was told her baby was in actual fact very much alive.  I wasn’t going to give up without a fight was I?  I was having none of it and was no doubt delighted to prove the doctors wrong.

As it turned out, I was born too early and I was far from the text-book bouncing baby by all accounts, but I made sure to remind my mother that I was not an ‘easy’ baby by screaming at the top of my lungs for a few weeks (months?).    Such was my fate then to be born a Virgo and I’m happy with that.  Heck, I’m happy to be here.

Here is my flash:

Stars In His Eyes

“I love looking at the stars, don’t you?”

Lacey sucked smoke from her cigarette and almost choked.

“Stars? Don’t start on stars. Matt goes outside every night to ‘study the stars’. He didn’t give a damn about them until a few weeks ago.”

“But look Lace…up there! Doesn’t that intrigue you, the symbols and the meaning? There….Orion…see, his shoulders, sword…”

“Orion? Give me a break! That’s all Matt keeps talking about. If I didn’t know him better, I’d think he was up to no good… ”

“Let’s go inside and crack open that bottle shall we?” smiled Helen weakly.

I do love old tearooms. The one you enjoyed looks lovely. I have lots of gorgeous teacups but nobody does teas anymore. Gorgeous basket of flowers and, hmm a Kindle Paperwhite. Wooo hooo.
You flash is a wonderful reminder to look UP. I haven’t looked at stars for ages and ages. I like Mr.Stars-in-His-Eyes personality. ❤ 🙂

Woo Hoo!! What a fabulous party you put on Tess, thank you so much! I’m loving every second of it…and I’m sure your cake would have been delicious 🙂 I had a lovely week (despite battling a wretched virus which laid me and hubby low, but was fine for the first part of the week thankfully…) and yes, you would love this tearoom. I didn’t know about it so I was very pleasantly surprised when Mum took me there. I too have a collection of lovely tea cups, 3 tiered cake stands, milk jugs, the lot, but can’t even remember when I did ‘proper’ tea. Interestingly, I did and went to more teas in the States than I ever did here! But it has become very popular here again and we have these ‘pop-up’ tea rooms opening up in people’s front rooms. A novel idea and a cute little business idea methinks…
Yes…I did get my Kindle Paperwhite as I hoped! Now I have no excuse not to read all those books I’ve been promising to read. The list is endless…now I just need a nice parcel of time neatly wrapped up with a pretty bow tied on top 😛
Oh I’m so glad you like the flash…coming from you my friend, that is high praise indeed. Mr Stars-In-His-Eyes is a lovely guy…but it isn’t his wife he has on his mind when he is star-gazing… 😉 ❤

Prosecco? Champagne? I’m coming down to your summerhouse pronto dear Sherri. Happy, happy birthday dear friend, you are a few weeks before me (and a few years too) but my mother was a Virgo, and although a prolific reader I don’t think she ever wrote anything other than letters in her life. Love the little story – no stars ⭐ ⭐ here recently, we seem to be shrouded in cloud all the time, but still warm. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead 🍸

I often wonder if I’d been a Virgo had I been born when I was supposed to be but I feel I fit the Virgo description for the most part. We could have shared a birthday, who knows? You must be a Libra then? Same as my eldest son and my Granny. Lovely people…
Love your little stars and the martini glass and you’ve really got me smiling with your wonderful birthday wishes, thanks so much my friend ❤ It's been great hanging out with you here for some time now isn't it? I hope the stars do come out for you soon…I love to look up and pick out various constellations but I'm no expert. I used to be really into astrology when a teenager but then became more interested in astronomy…always wanted a telescope…maybe next year, haha 😛

  8. I found you again finally. Did you know you were lost? BTW, Happy Birthday Virgo. There are no accidents. You were meant to be one. I stopped by to let you know that as much as I appreciated the Butterfly Light award you offered, I was so overwhelmed with work on this place I almost didn’t have time to celebrate my own birthday at the beginning of this month. My daughter took me to the beach for 3 days so I could NOT work. I have not been getting notification of your posts but I will look into that. Tea is the perfect way to celebrate a birthday. Did that last year with my daughter on my 65th. My mother is no longer here to join in. Fancy tea is our favorite thing to do. I’m starting to catch my breath here and start writing again a bit. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness and enjoy your birthday month.

Hi Marlene, and I must apologise for replying to your lovely message so late. I came back to it and then somehow got sidelined…so what’s new pussycat?… then on Friday, my catch up day and everything went completely pear-shaped when I had to take my poor daughter to Emergency (as per today’s post). So here I am, so very late but no, I didn’t know I was lost!!! So glad you found me again though! And I thank you very much for the kind birthday wishes. Had a lovely time, then got sick and everything descended after that. What a shame, but we are on the up and up once again… phew 🙂 Absolutely no worries on the award and I’m so glad you had a lovely birthday too. I fully understand the time constraints. I hope you will get notifications now and I’ll be over to you to catch up too now that you are blogging regularly again. You’ve been very busy! Think we both need to take some time out and enjoy a nice cup of tea and a chat and then get back to our writing…I find the endless distractions prevent me writing half as much as I’d like to but then that’s life and what would we do without our happy distractions? Take care and see you soon… 🙂

What a wonderful way to celebrate your birthday! Prosecco is my favorite glass of bubbles! Do tell, what are cream teas? I saw it on the sign at that beautiful tea house. And what a gorgeous tea set! The flowers are so brilliant and well arranged and the Kindle White an exceptional gift. I bought one last year and love it so much. Happy Birthday again, for good measure! You certainly were born a fighter. 🙂 Your flash is star-studded with several tensions building under the skies. Great writing!

Well we share something else Charli, that’s great! Cheers to you then my friend 🙂 Ah, well, a ‘Cream Tea’ is a summer specialty sold up and down the land in cafes, restaurants, pubs and of course tea rooms. If you ordered one you would get a pot of tea (most places now offer a wide choice of teas but I always go for my usual black English Breakfast variety because I’m boring, ha!), and two scones (like your plain biscuits) with little pots of butter, strawberry jam and clotted cream with which to slather them when split in two. Clotted cream is usually from the West Country comprising mostly Devon and Cornwall but also Somerset, where I live, which borders Devon. It’s a very thick cream, quite yellow, and very rich so you don’t want too much. If you ever do visit these parts, I’ll take you out for one…I think you’d love it 🙂
Yes, I was thrilled that hubby gave me the Kindle – I had been dropping strong hints for some time as I think I had mentioned to you. I feel ultra modern now… 😉
I’m thrilled you liked the flash and picked up on the tension…and thanks again for your lovely birthday wishes. It was a lovely time and I’m finally feeling a bit better, phew. Keeping on writing! See you over at the Ranch 🙂

I keep thinking about it…and how we have both had to fight and look how we were both born ‘out of time’ yet here we are…one Virgo and one Libra. Alive and kicking. Yes!!! Thanks so much Jenny, my lovely friend. The tea shop is actually in Castle Cary, about 40 minutes from here. I used to work there funnily enough (in the town, at a solicitors) but typically, the tea shop wasn’t there then. I didn’t even know about it until Mum took me there as a surprise, so who knew? It was like going back to the 30’s. C loved it because it was dark and she loved the ‘old style’ music gently playing in the background 😉 Brighton of course has it’s fair share of tea shops but I’ve only even been in one – and that was with Nicky. You should have seen the faces when I walked in with my 6’5″ ‘rocker’ son with long, black hair and leather jacket who then sat down and ‘took tea’ with his mum. Haha. it was priceless 😉 xxx

  18. Sherri, you and I share some similarities. I too am a Virgo. I, too, was a surprise. My mother’s doctor thought she had something wrong with her, and as she came out of the anesthesia, my father told her she was going to have a baby (me), a two month old fetus.

Also I’ve got this crazy idea that having a Kindle will help me read more quickly, which I really need to do. So I’m glad you won’t judge me too harshly…it won’t change me 😉

She had a very nasty virus and had loads of tests as they thought it might be viral meningitis but turned out not thankfully. She is much better now but still needs follow up blood tests for inflammation which I took her for today. Anyway, all this talk of doctors, I am very grateful for the NHS in more ways than one 😉
And I’m thrilled that you got it completely with the flash…spot on my friend…you must have read it in the stars 😉 So glad you enjoyed it. I hope your weekend was less eventful than mine in a good way…and I’ll catch up you asap ❤

My weekend was eventful but in a nice way. Friday I did my presentation for my confirmation of candidature and passed. Then Saturday went to a writing workshop followed by dancing in the evening and lunch with friends Sunday. Great fun.
Hope your daughter continues to improve and you can stop worrying. Take a deep breath, a long sleep and then my friend we’ll head for a walk. Take care – you don’t want to get sick also. ❤ 🙂
