Before I dared to call myself a writer, before I could ever imagine seeing even a single word of mine in print, before I knew what a blog was, I read this:
‘When your life’s seasons, assignments or relationships change, begin to adjust. Learn to play by the new rules…when the music changes, it’s time to learn some new dance steps, otherwise you’ll finish up sitting on the sidelines.’ ~ UCB Daily Word
At the time I read those words, I was sitting on those sidelines and I know it’s not a good place to be. But I had a choice – stay there and go nowhere, or get up, learn some new steps and dance. Dance and make it count.

But sometimes we have to say goodbye to all we know before we can begin again and sometimes that means never going back ~
California Dreaming
She would miss it, the Californian Sun, but strapped into a seat on a 747 staring aimlessly at the sky map, what would it matter? She wasn’t coming back.
A last vacation with the kids, he said, but he never showed up, leaving her with empty explanations and she was sick of it.
Foam-capped waves danced on the sand, then sucked back again into vast sea, teasing her children in the chase as big sky melted into horizon’s dark line, Pacific sun sliding into purple day’s end.
Time to go.
A lone gull wheeled overhead and shrilled goodbye.
But we can go back if it means understanding how far we’ve come. And if that means dancing on a beach as the Californian sun slips into purple day’s end, even better.
Sidelined no more.
We know who we are and we know where we’re going.
We just have to believe.

And last, but certainly not least, thank you to Jude not only for her amazing photography but also her new Garden Challenge. February’s prompt is ‘Monochrome’. She asks for something:
‘…black and white or tones of one colour. Look for texture, shape and patterns. The subject matter is entirely up to you, but should be loosely garden related.‘

I was determined to get a monochrome photo for you before February ended, especially since I missed January’s prompt 😦 I’m glad you liked the daffies, thank you! 🙂 I was rather pleased with the way the photo turned out, I admit. I had never thought of turning a flower shot into monochrome. It’s a nice effect. See what you’ve taught me Jude? 😉 Things are moving along thank you, working on my memoir slowly but surely. Ahh…I feel for you, moving is so stressful. I hope it will all be over soon and you’ll be sitting in your gorgeous new home by the sea, popping the bubbly in celebration. How wonderful 🙂

I dread it each time, and having lived where we are for 8 years now, the longest of anywhere since I was a kid (and that was 10 years), I find the thought more and more horrible. Yet, still restless and not ready to say ‘this is it’ by any means! 😉 You’ll get there Jude…one day at a time. Hope you get plenty of rests in between. I’m thnking of you my friend 🙂 xx

Something else we have in common then. Though my longest in one house was 18 years, after I returned from SA. Have moved six times in the last 14 years so this will be the seventh and hopefully the last. But you never know. So much packing, you’d think I’d be used to it by now.

My poor pot, it’s falling apart, but I like the old look! I just hope it doesn’t completely disintegrate like some of my others! I cheated a bit, that shot was from last year, I’ve got some different bulbs in there this time (can’t remember what they are, ha!) and not yet flowering, but will let you know when they do! My narcissus are all out though, hence the monochrome shot for Jude. All these pics except for the robin were taken in March or April two or three years ago…my trip to California in 2013 seems so long ago now. Glad you enjoyed it, thank you Jenny. Busy as always, and I hope things are going well for you, and you take care too 🙂 xx

I like the old crumbling look too. But that pot with the dragonflies – I want one! The garden pots I like the best are the weathered in ones – some of mine are covered in lichen which is probably really bad for the plants but they look so much better than the shiny flower pots some places sell.
Things here pretty busy – much going on, some good, some bad. I’m not writing enough which is frustrating but life gets in the way sometimes!

I think I’ve told you about a favourite book from my childhood, “The Christmas Robin”. I’ve never seen a robin (though I have a wonderful friend named Robin!) The Californian Welcome is just gorgeous. Was that your home? I’d love to pop in for a visit. Your choice of quotes is remarkable. Each speaks loudly to me. And I love that you have added them to photos, enhancing their meaning. Well done!

I remember you telling me about ‘The Christmas Robin’,a book that surprisingly I’ve never come across. Which is odd considering how much I adore Christmas and Robins! (And I remember your wonderful post about your dear friend Robin <3) Note to self: Must read the book! I'm so glad the quotes spoke to you. They are three of my favourites and I was really glad to have the opportunity to share them here. But I am very remiss, as I had fully intended to mention you also in this post Norah, since it is you who inspired me to start putting words on my photos in this fashion. I was up until midnight getting this week's flash over at the Ranch, having not long got this post up, and somehow, when I went in to edit, I realised that I missed off a paragraph. I have an awards post planned very soon, to thank the lovely Debby who gave them to me, and as part of that 'thank you' post, I will also thank and link to lovely you. That's very important to me to do that 🙂 As for the Californian Welcome, that wasn't my home (I wish!) but a restaurant called The Apple Farm in the town of San Luis Obispo, not far from where we lived. I often met my dear friends there for 'brunch' and took my mum there many times over the years when she visited. The children too. One of my most favourite places in all the world, and one I got to visit again in April 2013 when I went back to California after ten years away. You are right Norah, saying goodbye does bring new beginnings and sometimes it is good to go back and remember all that was good and still is! Lovely to keep in touch, as we can, but I am heading your way… 🙂

If I were to bust my one dance move, I suspect you would probably shuffle subtly away and I would blame you, the state of my one move is not good. Spring seems to be here now and it’s great to be sharing another one with you my friend. Blogging go slows are tough but to achieve something sacrifices need to be made and as writers, we all understand that and support you like that Newcastle United supporter who always has no top on in the winter.

What a wonderful post, Sherri. Loved the photos of the robin and especially the front porch with the banner! As I look outside my office window this afternoon I see snowflakes so your daffodils remind me (in a much needed way) that spring is right around the corner! The Maya Angelou quote that you shared is one of my favorites. I don’t typically remember quotes, but this is one that strikes me each time I read it again. It’s so easy to observe from the sidelines isn’t it? Off the bench methinks and doing a warm up dance! Lovely post. Gorgeous robin. My favourite garden bird as they have such a fierce little character. I have a regular who nests in the hydrangea growing up the wall outside the kitchen here. We’ve had fledglings inside on hot days with one parent scavenging crumbs off the floor when the door is open! Unfortunately it was disastrous one hot summer with three cats.. The parents have learned though and wait til I throw things outside! (Not that it’s been that warm the last few summers).
Glad to see you adapting and changing and finding a new groove with the blogging. Looking forward to sharing the next dance.. 😀

Oh Lisa, you have a nesting robin family? How wonderful! And they come into your house too…that is my dream, no kidding! My mum has a resident robin family. We have two cats so they keep the nesting chances down. Thankfully, Sweet Robin still visits along with his other feathered friends…including a pair of pigeons which tend to take over. I do clap my hands at them, I admit… ! A warm up dance, practice for those new steps and prepare for the next dance. Can’t wait 🙂 xx ❤

How kind of Mr Militant Negro. I don’t know him though, so will have to check him out. I would be honoured to guest post again on your site Sarah, once I’ve got to grips with the second draft, which I’m wading through. Took your advice, went a bit further ahead, tidied up, then back to those sticky first chapters. It helped me as you said it would to get a better handle on the timeline and when to bring in certain scenes – or not. So thank you for that! Long way to go…and I get overwhelmed if I look at the big picture. But I am refusing to get stressed and keep looking at that progress one day at a time. Much better. I’m so glad you have 3 guest storytellers lined up, that’s great! And don’t forget, anytiime you want to guest post over at the Summerhouse, just say the word…

It is less stressful. The two men of the household gave me a gentle telling-off yesterday evening, re working too hard and forgetting to relax, as I was giving myself palpitations D: Heart running smoothly today and all going well xxxx

I’ve seen so many women our age learning new dance steps and moving away from the wall or sidelines. It’s a good time to be of this generation, if that makes sense. So much is available to us.

Thank you Kath…life really is wonderful. I am glad to catch up with your lovely comments (and I love your new profile pic…you are lovely…) at last. Sadly, my dear mum suffered a stroke on Sunday, and I haven’t been able to blog at all. I managed to find this moment to catch up here before signing off for a little while as I focus on helping her as she recovers, A huge shock, but thank goodness it was not worse. And so we keep dancing…xx
