Before I got the news about Dad, a ‘Strawberry Moon‘ appeared in our June skies. So-called as it marks the beginning of strawberry season, this full moon was a rare occurrence because it coincided with Summer Solstice on June 21st, the first time for almost fifty years.

As if by magic, while taking the above photograph, Eddie, our black cat, appeared on the roof of the Summerhouse. I’ll save this one for Halloween, I thought at the time.

Eddie was born in a barn and loved every second of it. Raised on a Dorset farm until we adopted him as a ten week old kitten, ten years on and he still thinks he can come and go as he pleases. But we keep him at night as much as possible. Strangely, on cold, wet nights, he does not protest.
But whatever the weather on Halloween, we always keep him safely indoors because some people have strange, superstitious ideas about black cats. Others, this year it seems, also have strange ideas about clowns. I hope we don’t see any tonight…
But I don’t like to think about all that as we carve our pumpkin…

The Strawberry Moon has been and gone, but I wonder still at the memory of its ethereal, shimmering beauty lighting up our Summer Solstice skies. I wonder if Dad looked up into the sky that night? I like to think he did…
And I wonder, did he remember a night in 1969 when we stood side by side and stared up at the moon, imagining what it must have been like for Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin the first time they walked on the moon only a few months earlier?
Dad and I often talked about the moon and the stars and the skies.
Memories of Halloween spent with my children; of sky-gazing with Dad; of Eddie running wild as a kitten: all threads woven into the fabric of storytelling.
But I expect the only story Eddie will be telling tonight will be the one about a full tummy and a nice, cosy chair to curl up on. No worries about clowns or black cat superstition for him.

You and Eddie make a great team, Sherri, and with “Jack” rounding out the art work, this is such a fun post. Like Jenny, I’d never heard of a strawberry moon, so I loved learning of this. My grandmother had taught me about blood moons and shadow moons, and in science class I learned about the rest, but this was my first strawberry.

Ahh…when Eddie cuddles up to me in the morning as he always does before I get up, I’ll tell him that you said we make a great team Marylin 🙂 I had never heard of a strawberry moon until this past June either. I thought it was called that because the moon at that time of year looks sort of pinkish and larger than usual…but no! It was pretty amazing to see it. What a priceless shot of the strawberry moon and Eddie. Don’t you just love that life is filled with juicy memories. Cats are so curious about everything. Yours is enjoying his lesson in pumpkin carving. Hope you have a lovely Halloween. I think it’s going to stop raining for the kids. 🙂

Thanks Marlene, our Halloween is almost over now, just as you’ll be getting ready for yours and hopefully the rain has stopped. We had a slow start, then loads of kids. Had to bring in the pumpkin, as I ran out of candy! Didn’t want any evil clowns turning up on our doorstep…yikes! Eddie is more like a dog in many ways, follows us everywhere. He was curious about me being outside that time of night and had to join in to see for himself…I think he was as mesmerised as I was! Have a great time tonight, Happy Halloween! 🙂 xo

It’s all over with now for another year, but of course, one thing we have here we didn’t in America is upcoming Guy Fawkes night on November 5th. I’ve already heard a few fireworks going off in the neighbourhood…! Hope all is well with you…about to enter your summer, right? It was quiet this year, but that’s ok. I’ve been so busy lately it was nice not to be overly busy for once. Daughter wore what looked like black leggings and boots and a long top with a pair of black cat ears :). Easy costume! xoxo

So lovely that you got the spot a full moon on the night of the summer solstice. It sure looks big, round and very fat, and very much full of light and life. Maybe Eddie thinks that some of his cat friends lives on that moon far, far away….
Happy Halloween, Sherri. Hope nothing out of the ordinary happened and nothing went bump in the night over at your neck of the woods. Some people here in Australia like to get in the Halloween spirit by dressing up, and candy always goes on special at the grocery store this time of the year. Yesterday on the way to work, there were free goody bags filled with chocolate and candy being given out on the streets. I took one and it looks like a lot of candy to last a while. Hope you had your share of sweet treats too, and take care my friend 🙂 ❤

What a beautiful post for Halloween, Sherri. I hope you enjoyed the evening spoiling trick or treaters with treats. Looks like you were well-prepared. We had no one knock on our door. Halloween is not big over here, though it is becoming more so with each year; and there are no children (sad face) in our neighbourhood.
I hadn’t heard of a strawberry moon. It sounds beautiful, magical, and other-worldly. How considerate of Eddie to enhance your photograph with his well-timed pose.

Great photo of Eddie. I saw you had a good halloween. I’m afraid it passed by unnoticed by us, our street and seemingly the entire neighbourhood. Even Aldi wasn’t selling Halloween trinkets and sweets. I did get something in at the last minute, just in case, but we have ended up eating it ourselves. Lovely memories for you Sherri of your Dad and the moon and Halloween and your time with your children in the country where Halloween is a big deal. Lots of love 🙂

Your photo of Eddie looking up at the Strawbery moon would make a wonderful book cover, Sherri. The only problem would be that Eddie may then ask for some of the royalties. However, I’m sure an extra treat here and there would also be very acceptable to him.
I hope you had a wonderful Halloween. I always enjoy this time of the year although Toby does not like the fireworks (poor thing). Hopefully, the security jacket we got him last year will help calm him during the evening of 5th November. It seemed to do the job last year and I really don’t mind taking him on his last walk of the day after the fireworks are all done.

What a wonderful idea Hugh! I think Eddie already gets enough ‘royalties’ as it is…any more, and it might go to his head – or his tummy, lol 😉 We’ve since chatted about Halloween and already, bonfire night has been and gone…where does the time go? We didn’t do fireworks this year, spending the weekend with my brother instead. I hope the security jacket helped Toby again this year and your after-fireworks walk was enjoyable. Strangely, Eddie isn’t fazed by them, but Maisy, our 14 year old tabby, hates them. She hides away and doesn’t appear until she thinks it’s safe to do so. Thank you Hugh, we did and I hope your weekend was wonderful too…perhaps with an ongoing celebration, or two? 🙂 xxx

Well, having now got my hands finally on my book (Ok, it was only a proof, but the feeling was wonderful), we did have a few celebrations, Sherri. I’ve already found a few minor mistakes in the proof. Only small things like gaps between the last word and the full stop, so I’d recommend anybody writing a book, for the first time, to get that proof and check it again. I think I can see that publishing light now. 😀

So that’s a strawberry moon! In the states we have a harvest moon which is it’s fall counterpart. I love that thought of you and your Dad sharing glimpses of the same moon, not just last June but throughout your life. There’s some sort of deep connectivity in having shared lunar glimpses together. I got so silly-excited over our own moon conversation that I was determined to find moonstone at one of the many local rock shops in Zion Canyon. That sent me on quite a chase — evidently, everyone was out of stock. At last, I found some raw pieces. They are not the iridescent milky-white stone tumbled for jewelry, but raw pieces. They signify “new beginnings” and oddly, moonstone is the birthstone of June — the same month as your strawberry moon! I have them in a jar of water, sitting outside, soaking up the waxing super moon. Oh, I how I wish I could share Halloween with you! I love a good Halloween party! Without weird clowns or black cat superstitions, of course.

Haha…love ‘silly-excited’! I loved our conversation too, you’ll see my message to you about needing some of that zapping moon energy, so imaging those beautiful raw pieces you found – and what a mission for you to find them, I wonder why so out of stock? – and what they represent, and I didn’t know that moonstone is the birthstone of June – wow…these coincidences!…- and now you have them soaking up all that super Harvest Moon energy! So beautiful. Dad would get such a kick out of knowing this, a powerful extension of those ‘shared lunar glimpses’ ❤ I am not surprised to know you love a good Halloween party Charli…one more thing to put on the list! C misses Halloween in the USA to this day. I do my best to recreate it…with Eddie's help, of course 😉 And as for those clowns, I'll be doing the chasing if I clap my eyes on one! Turns out I’m a week off on the Super Moon! It’s still waxing so we’ll just let the moonstones bask another week! I was delighted to see that southern Utah embraces Halloween. People really get into decorating their yards and businesses. We were traveling that night so I’m not sure what the trick-o-treating was like. It was eye-popping passing through Las Vegas where folks on the streets thought costumes meant discarding clothes! I saw more men in g-strings that ought not be in ones! Tricks! Not treats!

Sherri, I think the real star of this post is your Eddie! Wonderful haunting photo of him against the moon – I remember this one from June and it was astonishing and reminiscent of raw pagan times. Lovely memories of you and your father – even today I will glance at the moon and be awed by the thought that humans walked on its surface. Hello my friend, I just tried to comment on your ‘Rilke’s…’ but I think it has gone to spam 😦 It’s happened to several blogs this afternoon. So typical, just when I thought I had a bit of time to get a little caught up but nooooooo. So annoying. I’ve contacted akismet, so hopefully I can get it sorted asap. Meanwhile, I thought I’d message you here to let you know I have read all your poetry posts (but didn’t comment) and was particularly intrigued by Haiku Rhapsodies which sounds like such a captivating and delightful book. I’ve only written one or two Haikus for some reason, would really like to explore the writing and reading of in time… You did so well to get all those posts out in such an amazing and enjoyable poetry-fest for you and for your readers 🙂

I always check my spam first these days as every so often people get randomly put in there…never sure why that is. Thank you for reading, it was a ton of words for you to go through and I do appreciate it. I don;t think I will be quite so prolific next time I have a week on the same genre lol…although it was good to be focused on writing.

I really wanted to read your ‘poetry week’ and I’m just sorry I missed it while it was ongoing. I was going to build up to it so people knew it was coming but time, work and the rest of the usual got in the way. It means a lot that you caught up and read through the mountain of words I created. I like going off piste, so to speak, to find new and exciting authors and ideas.
